Cubism

What is Cubism?
It's the subject of the drawing that is broken up by a drawing of a range angles. Picasso and Braque got inspiration and advice from Paul Cezanne ( not a cubism artist) to look at nature in terms of shape. The style was also influenced by African culture. Often the surfaces intersect at seemingly random angles, removing a coherent sense of depth. The background and objects overlap to create shallow space that is hardtop define. This is one of cubism's distinct, clear characteristics. In 1911 cubism slowly became more abstract.


What was the first painting of Cubism?
Les Demoiselles d'Avignon (1907) was considered the first cubist painting. It was influenced by paintings of Paul Cezanne and by fauvists, as well by African sculptures. The subject of the picture are not actually women or models in the city of Avignon, but prostitutes of a street named Avigon.


What was the effect of Cubism?
20th century avant garde art was pioneered by Pablo Picasso and George Braque. The movement of cubism revolutionized Europe painting and sculptures. It inspired related movements in music and literature. Later the style was improved by Spaniard Juan Gris.

  • Analytic Cubism ( looking at all the view points of an object ) which was mostly focused in France 1908 and 1911.
  • Synthetic Cubism ( using synthetic materials in the art) the movement spread and remained vital until around 1919, when the surrealistic movement gained popularity.
